Diamond Jewellery Care

  • Regular cleaning of jewellery keeps them shining and beautiful. Proper care and cleaning must be done after consumption of fine and precious jewellery.
  • Visiting your jeweller a minimum of once a year is highly recommended.
  • The jeweller will give your jewellery a professional clean and check that the setting is secure
  • Jewellery should not be stored together since it can be scratched, tangled or chipped. Although diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, a diamond will scratch another diamond.
  • Fine jewellery should be taken to jeweller for assessment and cleaning. All the prongs for gemstone security should be checked. When a jeweller cleans your jewellery, he will also test the stone itself for any damage that may warrant re-cutting or re-polishing.
  • Prepare a small bowl of warm sudsy water with a mild liquid detergent. Gently brush the jewellery with a soft toothbrush while it is in the suds. Then rinse each piece under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth.
  • In a small bowl, soak the jewellery in a half-and half solution of cold water and household ammonia for thirty minutes. Lift out and gently tap around the front and back of the mounting with a small soft brush. Swish in the solution a second time, rinse and drain on tissue paper.
  • Wear jewellery as per the event; light jewellery for offices, semi-light while in college and shopping, heavy for parties and wedding.
  • Toothpaste and other abrasive substances can scratch your jewellery.
  • Try to guard any jewellery from sharp blows, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures and sunlight. Sunlight may fade various gemstones.
  • When doing household work such as gardening and cleaning, be certain to remove hand wear jewellery.
  • Put jewellery on after washing and applying any make-up or hair spray.
  • Avoid wearing jewellery while swimming in a swimming pool. The chlorine can cause damage to various gemstones and gold.
  • Due to softness pearls need special care. Use clean water to rinse and wipe with soft chamois cloth after each wearing. Do not use plastic bags to store pearls. Store pearl necklace flat as silk stretches over time.
